How to Add Page Numbers in LaTeX

Page numbers are added automatically in most LaTeX document classes. Here's how to customize them.

Default Page Numbers

Most document classes add page numbers automatically at the bottom center:

\documentclass{article}
\begin{document}
Your content here...
\end{document}

Page Number Styles

Change the numbering style with \pagenumbering{}:

\pagenumbering{arabic}  % 1, 2, 3...
\pagenumbering{roman}   % i, ii, iii...
\pagenumbering{Roman}   % I, II, III...
\pagenumbering{alph}    % a, b, c...
\pagenumbering{Alph}    % A, B, C...

Position Page Numbers

Use page styles to control position:

\pagestyle{plain}     % bottom center (default)
\pagestyle{headings}  % top with chapter/section info
\pagestyle{empty}     % no page numbers

Start Numbering from Specific Page

Reset the page counter:

\setcounter{page}{1}  % start counting from 1

💡 Tips

  • •Use Roman numerals (i, ii, iii) for front matter, Arabic (1, 2, 3) for main content
  • •\thispagestyle{empty} removes numbers from just one page
  • •For advanced headers/footers, use the fancyhdr package
